Taking The Explorers Club Flag to Sistema Calera

A new chapter in our exploration of Sistema Calera.

The Explorers Club Flag displayed in a wooden frame

Our January 2027 expedition to Sistema Calera, Mexico, has been awarded The Explorers Club Flag. I’ll return with Dr. Luis Espinasa and Mike Sandone to investigate possible human modification of Ice Age animal bones and continue exploring the cave’s submerged passages by underwater ROV.

For those unfamiliar with this tradition, the Flag has accompanied Explorers Club members to the Moon, to the depths of the ocean, and on expeditions around the world. Being entrusted with it is a special honor, recognizing an expedition’s purpose: to contribute new knowledge through original exploration. It also carries a responsibility to document the work accurately and share the results through a report preserved in the Club’s research archives.

For me, this is a deeply meaningful milestone. After decades of exploring caves, mines, and overlooked places, being invited to carry this symbol of exploration connects work I care about to a history I have long admired. I’m excited, grateful, and looking forward to the work ahead—and to sharing what we learn.
